About the Company

Good Native Plants is an Indigenous-led non-profit organization intent on returning Canadian soils to Indigenous plants, on square foot at a time.

Blooming Red Columbine

Good Native Plants is more than just an organization; it's a passionate movement driven by a deep reverence for the natural world and a commitment to fostering harmony between humans and the environment. Founded on the principles of conservation, education, and cultural exchange, we strive to promote the use of native plants in landscaping and gardening practices across Canada.

Our journey began with a vision to bridge the gap between colonial gardening practices and the needs of wildlife. It was during university studies that our founder, inspired by the wisdom of Indigenous ecological knowledge, recognized the urgent need for change. Witnessing the disconnect between traditional gardening methods and the essential role of native plants in supporting biodiversity, they embarked on a mission to create positive change.

Central to our mission is the acknowledgment of Indigenous wisdom and stewardship of the land. In partnership with an Indigenous ecological knowledge holder from the Mi'kmaq nation, we offer private consulting services aimed at providing invaluable insights into the cultivation and preservation of native plants. Drawing from centuries of traditional wisdom and a profound connection to the land, our consultations offer a unique opportunity to learn from Indigenous perspectives on ecosystem management, plant identification, and sustainable gardening practices.

While our primary focus is currently in Eastern Canada, the knowledge and expertise we share are applicable nationwide. Whether you're a homeowner looking to transform your backyard into a wildlife sanctuary or a community organization seeking to restore native habitats, our consulting services provide personalized guidance tailored to your specific needs and goals.

At Good Native Plants, we believe that small actions can lead to significant change. By embracing the beauty and resilience of native plants, we can create landscapes that not only enhance the natural environment but also provide essential resources for wildlife survival. Together, let's cultivate a future where gardens are not just beautiful but also thriving ecosystems that sustain life in all its forms. Join us in our mission to do what's right for Canadian wildlife and the planet we call home.

Our Vision

At Good Native Plants, our vision is rooted in a profound reimagining of our relationship with the land. We envision a world where the monotonous expanse of exotic grass lawns is relegated to the past, replaced instead by vibrant landscapes teeming with life and purpose.

In this vision of tomorrow, lawns are no longer mere ornamental features but thriving ecosystems that serve a multitude of functions.

Instead of monocultures that require excessive water, chemical inputs, and maintenance, we see expanses of land dedicated to food production, nourishing both people and wildlife alike. These spaces are alive with the diversity of native plants, providing habitat for pollinators, birds, and other essential species.

Wildflower meadows, once a rare sight, become a common sight across neighborhoods, parks, and urban spaces, painting the landscape with a kaleidoscope of colors and fragrances. These wildflower havens not only provide essential forage for bees and butterflies but also serve as corridors for wildlife movement, reconnecting fragmented habitats and fostering biodiversity.

In our vision, communities are actively engaged in the stewardship of their landscapes, coming together to transform barren lawns into thriving gardens of abundance. People from all walks of life join hands to cultivate a deeper connection with the land, recognizing the intrinsic value of native plants in sustaining both human and ecological well-being.

Together, we strive for a future where the sterile uniformity of grass lawns is replaced by the dynamic vitality of food and wildflower production, where every patch of earth becomes a testament to our collective commitment to conservation and regeneration. This is the world we envision—one where nature thrives, communities flourish, and the beauty of the natural world is celebrated in every corner of our shared planet. Join us in turning this vision into reality.
